Powersports adventures in Teton Valley, Idaho

Off-road riding season for ATVs, UTVs, OHVs, side-by-sides, and other types of powersports vehicles generally runs from early April through November, depending on weather conditions. Riding locations are numerous, and we’ll share a few of our favorites below, but they include mountain trails throughout Teton Valley, the Big Hole Mountain Range, the Palisade Mountains, and St. Anthony Sand Dunes.

From Driggs, Victor, or Tetonia, you can rent or bring your own and easily access places that are fun for off-road exploring. As a bonus, you also get to experience incredible views, mountain lakes, creeks, beautiful forests, and even sand dunes that range as far as the eye can see.

If you’re new to the sport, driving a side-by-side is very similar to driving an automobile. Machines can fit from 2 to 6 people, and they have power steering and automatic transmission. If you’re renting, you will receive all the instructions you need to feel confident hitting the trails.

If you decide to take a day or two to ride in the area, you’ve got the very unique experience of being able to explore terrains that are very different, but equally amazing. From Teton Valley, you can access several mountain ranges and their trails in 30 minutes or less. You can also explore the St. Anthony sand dunes area less than an hour away. After you’re done riding, you can also visit Yellowstone National Park, Grand Teton National Park, or Jackson Hole, all only an hour or two away. The close proximity of these areas with Teton Valley located central to them all gives you the unique experience of enjoying thrilling sand dunes, majestic wildlife and mountains in Yellowstone and Grand Teton, and good old Wild West fun in Jackson Hole. Together, these places create an unforgettable adventure destination for nature lovers and thrill-seekers alike.

Where to go

Packsaddle Lake Trail for Off-Road Driving

One of the most popular places to off-road in Teton Valley is the Packsaddle Lake Trail in the Big Hole Mountain Range. It’s a great ride for beginners, and you’ve got the perfect lunch spot to relax at the lake before heading back. This route takes you to a natural lake from the eastern edge of the Big Holes near Driggs and Tetonia. There are amazing views of the Tetons along the way, including views across the Snake River Plain. This is a must-ride route in the Big Hole Range.

To get there, take Highway 33 to W 4000 N  and head west. You’ll cross over the Teton River and Cache Bridge on the way. You’ll see brown signs along Highway 33 directing you to turn west to reach Packsaddle Lake. Follow the road to the end and turn left, following State Road 381 (Packsaddle Lake Road). The road turns into one lane after a time, and is shared with bikers and hikers, so please use caution as you go.

St. Anthony Sand Dunes

St. Anthony Sand Dunes has more than 10,000 acres of dunes creating an out-of-this-world oasis. Some of the dunes are over 400 ft tall and span 32 miles! St. Anthony Sand Dunes “riding season” is April 1st through November 1st and the average temperatures during the summer months are around 78 degrees. Knowing where to ride at the dunes is important and you can check in with the rental companies to find out the best destinations at that time.
