Teton Valley's best spots for plein air artists
The annual Driggs Plein Air Festival draws many artists and travelers to our region every summer during late July and early August, all in search of the best locations for plein air artists. It’s a popular time for photographers as well, with the wildlife, scenery, and conditions prime for great images and lifestyle photography.
The spectacular vistas of the Teton Valley offer artists a breath-taking background against which to express their vision. This festival is a must-visit location for everyone interested in the arts because it not only displays the skill and commitment of plein air artists, but also the breathtaking natural beauty of Teton Valley, Idaho.
If you’re anywhere in Victor, Driggs, or the surrounding countryside during the week of the Plein Air Festival, you’ll notice artists set up in all the usual places – and a lot of unexpected ones, too. While the scenery is great no matter where you go, we’ve got some favorites. So if you’re an artist, photographer, or just someone who appreciates great scenery and being surrounded by all that makes our valley so beautiful, be sure to check these out.
#1: Victor Emporium: Right in the center of Victor you’ll find the iconic sight of Victor Emporium. With it’s colorful mural on the side and the Norman Rockwell type setting of families sitting out front enjoying huckleberry shakes, you’re sure to find a great scene to capture.
#2: South Bates (Nickerson/Teton Creek Bridge) and Bates Bridge: Two popular access sites for the Teton River, Bates and South Bates have Teton Views, meandering river vistas, people fishing, kayaking, floating, and wildflowers and rural fields in the background.
#3: Downtown Driggs: The town itself is filled with charming buildings, interesting murals, and communal locations that provide lots of subjects.
#4: Teton Springs Barn: Near the Bronze Buffalo at Teton Springs Golf Resort community is a very picturesque barn with all the roughened, weathered, old-school rural vibes you could wish for. Plus it’s surrounded by rural country and mountain ranges too!
#5: Teton Links Golf Course: Rural rolling hills, golf course greens, Teton or Big Hole Mountains in the distance, and possibly a moose or sandhill crane can all be seen in the area around the Teton Links Golf Course off Bates Road just west of Driggs. If you like the idea of golf courses, check out this article highlighting all the best golf courses in Teton Valley.
#6: Teton Canyon: Check out our articles about hiking trails and locations throughout Teton Canyon and prepare to be wowed by the scenery as you explore to find the perfect spot. Running rivers, majestic Teton mountains, quiet trails back in aspen and spruce groves, and lots of wildlflowers, meadows and everything else to tickle your artist’s eye.
#7: Grand Targhee Ski & Mountain Resort: Whether you set up at the bottom or ride the lift to the top, you’re guaranteed stunning vistas in all directions and at all times of the day.
#8: Moose Canyon: Located south of Victor, take Moose Canyon road back into a picturesque valley where you’ll find water features, canyons, quiet hiking trails, and more.
#9: Tributary Barn: If you like the idea of rustic barns but want to stay in town, check out the barn located on Highway 33 on the north side of Driggs near the entrance to the Tributary Golf Resort.
#10: Linn Canyon Ranch: This ranch, located near the Teton Reserve Golf Course just a mile north of Victor, offers beautiful horses, fields, farmland, barns, and forests for painting.
Tips for Plein Air Painters in Teton Valley
Consider the light
The light in the Tetons can change quickly, so be prepared to adjust your painting to capture the different effects. Early mornings and late evenings can all bring out special effects, not to mention the famous alpenglow lights against the Tetons!
Be aware of the weather
While summer is usually very temperate, we can have the occasional cloudy storm blow through quickly, so be sure to bring appropriate clothing and ear.
Respect the environment and private property
Be mindful of the natural beauty of the area and leave no trace of your painting activities and always make sure you are either on public lands or have permission from the landowner for your safety and for others.
