If you’re planning a vacation to Teton Valley, Idaho, the hardest part will be deciding what time of year is best. Honestly you can’t go wrong any time of the year, but if you like specific activities, festivals, or even temperatures, then we can help you decide on the best time to visit our valley here in Eastern Idaho (just 30 minutes away from Jackson Hole!)

First, let’s talk seasons. We could split it up into Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter, but that’s a little deceptive as they all overlap and you don’t have to limit yourself by looking at just the calendar months. Instead, we’re going to share the honest truth with you about life here in Teton Valley – you’ve got cold weather months, warm weather months, and that in-between time that we like to call “shoulder season.” They all offer a lot of great possibilities for travel and fun, and we’re going to share them here with you. 

Winter in Teton Valley, Idaho

When you think winter in Teton Valley, you think about snow, right? Snow can start falling here in early November, and the opening dates of the local ski resorts, including Grand Targhee, Snow King, and Jackson Hole, fall near the end of November. In addition to downhill skiing, soon after that you can also enjoy snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, winter wildlife hikes, snowshoeing and fat biking!

  • Snowscapes Festival: Artists from around the world join locals as they transform large blocks of snow into artistic sculptures. Watch them work all week long, then participate in the voting and celebrations. Click here for more details
  • The Grand Showdown / Teton Valley Skijoring: An iconic and unique event that features teams of horse and rider pulling a skier or snowboarder, this is an event that you have to see in person! Click here for more details.
  • American Dog Derby: North of Teton Valley, you can make a stop in Ashton to check out the American Dog Derby. Starting in 1917, this is the oldest dog sled race in the US and is held each year in. Click here for more details
  • Victor Holiday Festival of Lights: Traditional tree lighting, visits with Santa, and a Sugar Plum Lane craft fair are just the beginning. There’s also snow sculpting demos, a Turkey Toss, craft workshops and more. Click here for more details
  • Fall Off-Season Insider Tip: Early in the season (Late November to early December), many of the local restaurants here in Driggs, Victor and even over in Jackson Hole, offer specials such as 2-for-1 entrees, prix fixe menus, and discounts on wine or the entire bill. Summer in Teton Valley, Idaho

  • Wydaho Rendezvous Teton Mountain Bike Festival: Held during Labor Day weekend at Grand Targhee Resort, this festival for mountain bikers features activities that will cater to all levels with hundreds of miles of sweet singletrack trails, bike demos, skills clinics, live music, great food, and lots of entertainment.   • Greater Yellowstone Crane Festival: Celebrate the migration of Sandhill Cranes through Teton Valley at this annual event held every September.
